Programme Overview

The GD Science Club in association with the Department of Commerce, KR Arts and Science College, organized a seminar on “Consumer Awareness in Modern Business: From Trends to Consumer Rights.” The programme was conducted for the benefit of students and staff members.

The session was delivered by Dr. C. Rajkumar (Young Scientist), who explained the importance of consumer awareness in today’s modern business environment. He discussed how business trends are changing due to digital marketing, online shopping, and e-commerce platforms.

Practical Examples Explained

  • Buying a Bike: Checking warranty, insurance documents, registration details, proper billing, and service guarantee.
  • Purchasing a Biscuit Packet: Verifying expiry date, MRP, net weight, FSSAI mark, and quality standards.
  • Buying Colgate Toothpaste: Checking manufacturing date, price, brand authenticity, and safety certification.

Six Consumer Rights Explained

  • Right to Safety – Protection from harmful goods and services.
  • Right to be Informed – Complete information about price, quality, quantity, and standards.
  • Right to Choose – Freedom to select from a variety of products.
  • Right to be Heard – Consumer complaints must be addressed.
  • Right to Seek Redressal – Right to get compensation for defective goods or unfair practices.
  • Right to Consumer Education – Awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities.

Filing Consumer Complaints

The resource person also explained the procedure for filing complaints in consumer courts and online grievance portals. He motivated students to always ask for bills, verify product details, and be responsible consumers.

The programme was highly informative and interactive. It enhanced awareness among students about their rights in both major purchases like vehicles and daily-use products such as biscuits and toothpaste.
